On successful completion of this level the learners have a basic survival level of English, with some command of English sentence structure as well as vocabulary such as colours and everyday items. The learners are able to interact socially at a very basic level.
On successful completion of this level the learners can express past, present and future time, although not always accurately. They can understand basic texts and spoken language in very familiar situations. Among the other grammar studied is the difference between some and any, articles, comparative and superlative adjectives and the present perfect. The learners can interact at a basic level in situations like shops, cafés, airports and hotels.
On successful completion of this level the learners can recognise and produce the most common tenses in English. They also have a basic understanding of some of the more complex areas of English grammar, such as conditionals and reported speech. Their vocabulary has expanded to include such things as phrasal verbs and words which express more complex ideas. They can interact with a sympathetic interlocutor and begin to understand authentic texts. They can deal more confidently with situations such as travelling, telephoning and making invitations.
On successful completion of this level the learners will be familiar with the English tense system and can spontaneously and accurately use a wide variety of structures. They are also familiar with structures used for hypothesing, modal verbs and conditionals, as well as indirect questions. They can deal with less familiar texts and spoken situations and are able to express more complex and abstract ideas. Socially, they have learnt strategies for such things as making suggestions tactfully, giving opinions etc.
On successful completion of this level the learners can confidently use a wide variety of grammatical structures. Among the grammar studied are relative clauses, participle clauses and the future perfect tense. They have also expanded their vocabulary to include more idiomatic expressions and more comprehensive coverage of lexical fields, with which they may already be familiar at a basic level. At a social level they will be confident in areas such as complaining and exaggeration. They can understand almost all non-specialist native speaker conversation and written texts.
On successful completion of this level the learners have developed a full understanding of English, including an awareness of slang, idioms and register. They can interact confidently in virtually all non-specialist situations and can use English to express more subtle shades of meaning. Among grammar studied at this level are cleft sentences and various ways of hypothesing. They have learnt more esoteric vocabulary which allows them to express highly complex ideas and opinions.
